What have you learnt about technologies from the process constructing this product?

From producing this media product I have learnt how to use a variety of media technologies, such as editing software, video cameras, titling software and music creating software.

At the start of the production I did not know how to use any of these technologies, as I had never used any of them properly but know I can confidently use all of them to achieve the results I want without much complication. To edit our thriller we used Premier Pro by Adobe as it is simple to use but still has the necessary effects and attachments to edit our film, and get the desired result. We also used this to software to add titles to our film instead of using After Effects because it is more complicated to use than Premier Pro and it means we would have had to upload the film to a different software.

During the production process I learned how to use a camera and tripod effectively so the shots were steady and looked good, we used a DSLR camera as they shoot in higher quality than a regular camera.

I also used music editing software (mix craft) to produce the backing track for the thriller, this was probably the hardest thing to learn how to use I had never used anything like it before so it was very difficult to get used to at first.                              
 

I learned how to use all these different technologies by just using them over and over again until I was confident with using them, and when I didn’t know how to do certain thing I asked for help from either another student or from one of my teachers.

These new editing technologies and software’s make editing media products a lot easier as it can all be done on one computer instead of before when they had to done by hand instead of using a single computer. Premiere Pro allowed us to easily edit and add together all out clips/ shots and turn them into a smooth opening of a thriller, it also has lots of different effects which can be used to transition between 2 different shots. which can be used to create suspense and drama within the film.

Uses and Gratifications

In 1974 researchers called Blulmer and Katz expanded this theory and published their own. this stated that individuals might choose to use media for the following reasons.



Escapism/ Diversion: this allows people to escape from everyday life, problems and routines by watching TV/ media. This would apply to our thriller as it can help people escape from everyday life.

Personal relationship: Using the media for emotional and other interactions. E.G substituting soap operas for family life. This may not apply to our thriller as it is meant to be scary to audience cannot have any personal relationships with the thriller.

Personal identity: Finding yourself represented in the media, such as values and learning behaviours.

Surveillance: For information which could be useful for life, such as the news, weather and holiday deals.

Audience theories

Cultivation Theory:
Cultivation theory is a social theory which examines the long term affects of television.
The primary idea of Cultivation Theory is that the more time people spend 'living' in the television world, the more likely they are to believe social reality portrayed on television.
This theory was originally composed by G. Gerbner.



Hypodermic needle model:
According to the theory, the media is like a syringe which injects ideas attitudes and beliefs into the audience who as a powerless mass have little choice but to be influenced. E.G
if you watch something violent then you mat go and do something violent or you see a woman washing the pots on TV, if you are a woman you may go and do the same, if you are a man and you saw it you may expect women to wash the pots for you.

We will have to try and remove these from our thriller opening as we may influence peoples beliefs and ideas about paranormal. this may also affect our thriller because if we promote violence in anyway then the audience may become more violent as a result of witnessing violence.
